Santa Fe Depot in Waynoka
By Sandie Olson
Two of Western Oklahoma's most historic structures, the Santa Fe Depot and Harvey House, are great examples of preservation in our state. Both were built in 1910, and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After the Waynoka Historical Society acquired both buildings, the Harvey House, which is the only stand-alone Harvey House remaining in Oklahoma, was restored at a cost exceeding $1,000,000, and once again houses a restaurant along the Transcon, one of America's fastest and busiest rail lines. Also in the Harvey House are the Waynoka Air Rail Museum and the Museum Gift Shop. Much work has been done on the Santa Fe Depot. The replacement of the windows and exterior doors should begin in January, with plumbing, electrical, mechanical and finish work to follow. The site has been beautifully landscaped and parking lots paved. Federal transportation funds exceeding $1,000,000, $400,000 from the Oklahoma Centennial Commission and the Oklahoma legislature, another $500,000 or more in Waynoka Historical Society funds, and the approval of the State Historic Preservation Office, have made the preservation project at Waynoka Station possible.
