Separate Schools
Separate Schools

Oklahoma
's 1907 constitution was the only one in the union with a mandate that black and white children must attend separate (racially segregated) school facilities, a situation that endured unchanged for nearly half a century.   These schools are important places that tell a story of a community’s life as well as a part of Oklahoma’s story.  Neglect and vandalism have put these schools in danger of destruction.
